Heavy metal (sometimes referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s.[1] With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion and fast guitar solos. Allmusic declares, "Of all rock & roll's myriad forms, heavy metal is the most extreme in terms of volume, machismo, and theatricality."[2]
Heavy metal has long had a worldwide following of fans known as "metalheads" or "headbangers". Although early heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath attracted large audiences, they were often critically reviled at the time, a status common throughout the history of the genre. In the mid-1970s, Judas Priest helped spur the genre's evolution by discarding much of its blues influence; the New Wave of British Heavy Metal followed in a similar vein, fusing the music with a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed.
Heavy metal became broadly popular during the 1980s, when many now-widespread subgenres first evolved. Variations more aggressive and extreme than metal music of the past were mostly restricted to an underground audience; others, including glam metal and, to a lesser extent, thrash metal went on to mainstream commercial success. In recent years, styles such as nu metal have further expanded the definition of the genre.

Actually heavy metal was the first metal genre in the history of metal.First heavy metal bands like Black Sabbath , Led Zeppelin , Deep Purple or Judas Priest appeared in the late 60s and each of the 4 bands created lots of metal genres like : Black Sabbath created the Traditional Heavy Metal , Led Zeppelin influenced Glam Metal , Deep Purple influenced NWOBHM and Hard Rock a lot and Judas Priest created the Old School Heavy Metal.
The 70s bands like Thin Lizzy , Accept or Kiss why not AC/DC (are more like hard rock) continued the old guys work and created new styles like Kiss (they created that makeup stuff that was addopted by blackers and deathers)
The 80's bands actually appeared in 70's but they only succeded in the 80's because of the punk era in the Great Britain. Bands like Iron Maiden , Dio or Manowar that created a new style somethin' like war stuff and magic.
Also in the 80's the Glam Metal appeared originally from bands like Led Zeppelin , Kiss , Aerosmith or Judas Priest there were born Motley Crue , Poison , Cinderella and other Hair Metal rock bands
In the 90's the heavy metal scene was more touched by the Metal Gods, artists that tryed some solo projects like Bruce Dickinson or Halford, they had a really great succes but it was the last heavy metal succes.
All times heavy metal style is like from ABBA clothes to leather stuff (invented by Judas Priest) and from a girlish style to a true warrior.
The heavy metal genre gave us some great artists, the greatest of the world singers like Rob Halford (Metal God - best metal voice of the history) , Bruce Dickinson , Udo Dirckschneider , Ozzy Osbourne , Ronnie James Dio , Geoff Tate etc , guitar players like Yngwee Malmesteen , Dave Murray , Slash , Steve Vai etc , drummers like Nicko McBrain , Tomy Lee , Scott Travis or Lars Ulrich and bass players like Nikki Sixx , Duff McKegan , Steve Harris.
Heavy Metal is the first metal genre and all other genres are related to this music wave (thrash , gothic , death , black , extreme , progressive) they all have their roots in heavy metal
